RED RUFFED LEMUR (Varecia variegata rubra)

Similar in both shape and size to their relative the Black & White Ruffed lemur, this hadsome lemur has a beautiful, thick chestnut-red coat. The top of it's head and face are black as are it's feet, tail and the inside of it's limbs. By contrast the Red Ruffed lemur has a white patch on the back of it's neck.

These lemurs appear to be found mainly in the Masoala Peninsula on the north-east coast of Madagascar.

The diet of the Red Ruffed lemur consists mainly of fruit supplemented by nectar and leaves and occasionally flowers.

The mothers give birth to their young (usually twins or triplets) in nests made from twigs, leaves and moss. The young remain in the nests until they are around 20-25 days old, after which they venture out.
